saturday: SYNONYM

by admin on June 9, 2012

things have been quiet over here recently due to lots of small projects and one big project that are taking up my time. i am very excited to share SYNONYM, a new publication and website about aesthetics, ideas, and intention.

to quote the website, the ‘project was initiated out of a mixed frustration and perplexion with our own online habits and the general disposability that exists in the sharing and consumption of digital content. SYNONYM addresses an awareness of the internet’s influences on our own work and inspiration; moving with curiosity toward a new way of connecting with others online; and treating this space as if we did not have an unlimited amount of it.

SYNONYM will also be published as a corresponding biannual print journal, designed to supplement the website but comprised of unique content submitted by a selection of contributors on a theme. The theme of the first issue is ennui: “to weary by dullness, tedious repetition, and unwelcome attention.” It will be released in summer 2012. ‘

The journal’s web presence will focus first on a series of interviews with our contributors about the intersection of influence, profundity, and meaning. The website will be focused on questioning what we do and how we spend our time.

The first interview is with Here and There founder Nakako Hayashi. Probably of any magazine I’ve ever read, Here and There has influenced me most profoundly in its beauty and quality of content; the issue(s) I have were published more than five years ago, but they don’t feel dated at all; I’m really beyond excited to be able to share some words of Hayashi’s; she is a wise woman. There is another great interview with her here and more background info here.

The response we’ve gotten from contributors has been incredible. I have never been so floored by the generosity of strangers; it truly validates the entire project, and I can’t wait to share the line-up for this first issue.
For now, you can follow synonym on TWITTER and on the WEBSITE; you can get on our mailing list HERE. information about pre-ordering will be available soon.
